Warm weather is upon us. As many people turn to the outdoors for fun, commuknity offers an alternative to the heat and the long, hazy, lazy days of summer. Take a break from the heat, relax, put your feet up, and knit something!
Summer is the perfect time to knit tank tops and shells for daytime and shawls for the evening. We have a great selection of cotton, bamboo, soy and other cool fibers for making the perfect little piece to wear everyday or for that special occasion.
We also have fabulous silk and silk blend yarns for venturing into the world of shawls.
We have many wonderful lace books in our library and even a class or two to teach you techniques. One of our favorites is Victorian Lace Today. We are also looking forward to local knitter, Alison Hyde’s new book Wrapped in Comfort: Knitted Lace Shawls. Stay tuned for a book signing and reading with Alison later this summer at the shop.
Summer is a great time to knit for the home. Our staff is busy knitting up home décor for inspiration. We will have pillows, afghans, lamp shades and more. These items are fun and add such a personal touch to your home. Perhaps you would like some new placemats, a bath mat or some handmade wash cloths. If you are looking for a project this summer, small items can been knitted for the home. Kids can get into the act with these smaller projects too.
This is also the time of year for baby showers and a great time to knit small objects like baby cloths, lap blankets, booties and hats. Consider having fun knitting a gift rather than buying a store-bought item. It will mean so much to the mother that you took the time to add love to your gift giving by making it yourself. We have many baby items on display if you are looking for ideas. You can check out our selection of single patterns or drool over those darling babies modeling in one of the many baby books we offer in our library.
If you are really adventuresome, how about knitting up something lingerie- inspired? I’m serious! In Joan McGowan-Michael’s new book Knitting Lingerie Style, you will find 30 very hip and fun designs that are perfect for the warm weather.
If you are looking for something for your kids to do, commuknity is offering Kids Camps throughout July and August in the afternoon. Bring them by for camp or stay awhile in our living room to enjoy some knitting time for yourself if you like.
Our new schedule is just out with many classes for you to choose from. Be sure to consider that knitting is a year round activity and that summer is a time to sharpen your needles by learning new techniques for all those in depth projects you will want to begin once fall arrives.
We look forward to seeing you around the shop.
